The area surrounding Kyniska Palace is ideal for beautiful walks in nature. Enjoy beautiful scenery and walk through valleys, fruit trees, wild flowers & Greek herbs on the foothills of mount Taygetos.

For Hiking lovers there is the European hiking path E4 which passes through a large part of Laconia starting at Agios Petros -- Karyes - Vresthena - Theologos - Sparta - Mystras - Faneromeni Monastery - Anavryti - Laccomata - Taygetos Shelter - Pentavlou - AgiosDimitrios - Arna - Agia Marina - PanagiaGiatrissa - Kastania and ends in Gythio.
We suggest to following the route beginning close to the hotel at Mystras and passing through the Monastery of Faneromeni - Anavryti and Laccomata.

Crossing the gorge of Lagada, we reach the Monastery of Faneromeni and then Anavryti, at a higher altitude of 790 meters. This route lasts about 2 and half hours. From here, through an amazingly beautiful path that crosses cultivated lands and mountainous forests, head to Laccomata at an altitude of 1280 meters. A hiking information center is also located here. This part lasts 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Kalamata - Stoupa - Kardamyli
The beautiful city of Kalamata is only 58 km away from Sparta and is undoubtedly one of the top destinations in the Peloponnese. If you are feeling adventurous, we suggest that you follow the route that connects Sparta and Kalamata via Taygetos. The drive is about an hour but the wonderful mountainous landscape, full of steep rocks and running waters, will surely compensate you!
After reaching Kalamata, head east to reach the irresistible picturesque village of Kardamyli (37 km), and then continue on for the coastal village of Stoupa, (45km)

Gythio
Gythio is just 47km away from Sparta and is a seaside town with a scent of nobility and history. Admire the great tower houses of unique local architecture, and swim in the wonderful beaches of Skoutari, Kalyvia and Kamares.

Monemvasia
Just 65km away from Sparta, Monemvasia is another enchanting castle town in the Peloponnese that undoubtedly deserves your visit. Enjoy the idyllic atmosphere, wander around the narrow streets, visit the house of the great Greek poet Yannis Ritsos and ascend to the Upper Town to admire the breathtaking view of Myrtoo sea.

Mountaineering in Taygetos
According to mythology, Taygetos borrows its name from Taygeti, one of the Atlantis, who was transformed into a deer from Artemis to escape from Zeus. The mythical mountain, also called Pentadactyllos, offers wonderful cobbled paths that start from the plain, as well as many demanding paths that lead to the tops of Koufovouni, Goupata, Neraidovouna, Koza, Spanakaki, Sidirokastro and Profitis Ilias, which is the highest point of the mountain and the entire Peloponnese.

Climbing at Taygetos
Lagada climbing park offers more than 50 routes that are developed in four fields. If you are in the mood for an uplifting excursion, then the area of Lagada has a lot of climbing opportunities. It is a park that was created by the Protection, Management and Mild Tourist Development of Taygetus Program in the area of Lagada. It gives you unlimited climbing possibilities and it also offers the unique opportunity to rise above the “neighborhood” of the mythical Kaiades. The best time for climbing is considered to be between mid-May and mid-October.

Spartathlon
Reviving and following the footsteps of Pheidippides, the ancient Athenian long-distance runner, Spartathlon is a historic super-marathon that takes place every year at the end of September. Starting from Athens and finishing at Sparta, the athletes of Spartathlon run the distance that Phidippides traveled back in 490 BC. to seek help from the Spartans in the war of the Greeks against the Persians. Spartathlon is one of the world’s most difficult races and attracts worldwide interest thanks to its historical background.

Spartan Race
Spartan Race, which takes place each year at the start of November in Sparta, is the global leader in obstacle course races, with the right challenge for anyone - from first-time racers to elite athletes. Under the auspices of the Municipality of Sparta and with the support of the University of Peloponnese, the Spartan Race pushes you beyond your limits. The three main Spartan races are designed to cover all levels of fitness, offering Sprint for beginners, Super on harder terrain, and children’s race of 1.5 km for children under 14 years old.
